‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes’ Review

Image
‘City of Ashes’ is the second book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The story follows fifteen-year-old Clary Fray as she is thrown into a world of Demons and Downworlders. Clary is a Shadowhunter, a race of half human, half angel, people whose sole purpose is to protect the mundane world from the threats of these creatures. There’s just one problem she doesn’t know she is one. ‘City Of Ashes’ picks up immediately after the last book ended. As this is the second book in the series there isn’t much I can say without getting into spoilers, but if you like the supernatural and young adult fiction then I would highly recommend reading ‘City of Bones’ and ‘City of Ashes’ and then coming back and finishing this review. SPOILER WARNING!!! In my last review of this series, I didn’t mention the setting and I feel like I should mention it now before I get into the story. By placing the series in New York it adds so much tension to any battle scene as there are alw

'Spiderman Homecoming' Review:

Image
'Spiderman Homecoming' marks Tom Holland first solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. With no rehashed origin recap to drag the story down, 'Spiderman Homecoming' is a refreshing take on the character with never before seen villains. That being said, the film was hardly perfect, with below average supporting characters and inconsistent technology. This review is going to feature spoilers for 'Spiderman Homecoming' so if you haven't seen the movie yet I would highly recommend going to the cinema to watch it and then come back and finish reading this. SPOILER WARNING!!! The film opens with a recap of the events of 'Captain America: Civil War' told from Peter's perspective. This was a great refresher if like me you haven't seen the film in a while or if you've never seen a film in the MCU before. Viewers could easily go into this film and understand the majority of the story having to see the other fifteen predecessors. It

Lost in Translation: ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’

Image
So I’ve just come to the end of the first book in ‘The Mortal Instruments’ series, ‘City of Bones.’ One of the things that struck me whilst reading was how similar both the book and the film are. I figured that seen as I’d already seen the film and because the book was so similar to it, that instead of a review I’d do a comparison of the features of both of them and talk about what worked well for the different depictions.  As always, beware of spoilers for ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ ahead. SPOILER ALERT!!! One thing that immediately struck me about the book and the film was just how similar the dialogue was, with some passages being a word for word translation. For example, in a deleted scene from the movie, Simon (Robert Sheehan) points out two girls that are staring at Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) to which he replies ‘Of course they are, I’m stunningly attractive.’ Scenes like this, as well as many others in the film, are great as they bring life to the chara

The Lego Batman Movie Review

The Lego Batman Movie Review: Every Saturday me and my family sit down and watch a film together. This Saturday my brother chose the recently released 'The Lego Batman Movie'. Considering I was promised 'easily the best Batman movie' and 'a surprisingly evil Joker' the movie did not deliver what I was expecting.  Before I go on to any major criticism I should point out that context is very important for this film. I think this film would be great to show a group of children at the end of the school year, however, from the context of a critical standpoint this film was disappointing. With its overused jokes and cliché story, this movie struggled to get even a giggle out of me. Of course, beware of spoilers for 'The Lego Batman Movie' ahead. SPOILER ALERT!!! The movie opens on Batman (Will Arnett) commenting that 'all good movies start with a black screen' along with other Meta commentaries with it. Although some of these jokes were funny, fo
